for Tuba and Piano, 5 min duration
Written for, and commissioned by Dr. Jonathan Rowsell
“Fluttered the Straying Butterfly” is a work that asks us to notice things, to notice things that perhaps
go by unnoticed in our everyday life. It is a work that makes use of larger intervalic content and
frequent use of long durations tied over barlines to evoke this sense of something beyond our grasp,
something perhaps just beyond our gaze – a calling to seek out and reach towards, or to notice life’s
fleeting moments. Woven through the score are lines from Tomas Tranströmer’s poetic canon which
speak to the music’s metaphoric intentions.
